The Ultimate Wedding Photography Checklist and Timeline for Engaged Couples
Planning your wedding is such a special season, and it can also feel overwhelming at times. There are so many decisions being made all at once, and it is easy to wonder if you are forgetting something important. When it comes to your wedding photos, a little preparation can make the entire experience feel calmer, more intentional, and way more enjoyable.
This wedding photography checklist walks you through everything to think about, step by step, so you can feel confident and supported as your day approaches. My hope is that this helps you slow down, feel taken care of, and truly enjoy every part of the process.
12 months out: Book Your Photographer & Begin Dreaming
Once you have your wedding venue booked, it is the perfect time to start looking for your photographer. Your venue plays a big role in how your photos will look and feel, especially when it comes to lighting and flow, so having that locked in first makes everything smoother.
Spend time researching photographers whose work feels honest, emotional, and true to you. When you find someone whose images make you feel something, that is usually a good sign.
This is also a great time to start a Pinterest board or inspiration folder. Think less about recreating specific poses and more about collecting images that capture the feeling you want your wedding day to have.
9 months out: Engagement Session Planning
Your engagement session is such a fun and important part of this process. It is a chance to slow down, spend time together, and get comfortable in front of the camera before the wedding day arrives.
Around this time, plan to schedule your engagement session and start thinking about outfits that feel like you. Comfort and movement always photograph beautifully, and you never need to dress like someone you are not.
You will also fill out your engagement session questionnaire so I can get to know you better, learn what makes you feel comfortable, and make sure your session feels relaxed and meaningful.
6 months out: Figuring Out the Details
This is when things really start coming together.
Begin thinking through your family formal photos and who you would like included. Having this list started early makes the wedding day feel much more organized and stress free.
This is also when save the dates typically go out and when many couples decide whether they want to do a first look. There is no right or wrong choice here. Some couples love having that quiet moment together, and others prefer waiting until the ceremony. What matters most is choosing what feels best for you as a couple.
3 months out: timeline planning and coordination
Around three months out is when we begin building your wedding day timeline together. This is one of my favorite parts of the planning process because it helps protect space for the moments that matter most.
Wedding invitations are usually sent around this time, and it is also when your photographer and planner will work together to make sure the day flows smoothly. We will talk through lighting, travel time, portraits, and how to keep the day feeling unhurried.
1 month out: final details and confirmations
As your wedding day gets closer, we will finalize your timeline and share it with your vendor team so everyone feels prepared and aligned.
This is also a great time to confirm your family formal list and share any special photo requests or meaningful details. Clear communication here allows you to relax and trust that everything is taken care of.
THE DAY BEFORE: ORGANIZE AND PREP
The day before your wedding is all about setting yourself up for a peaceful morning.
Gather any details you would like photographed such as your rings, invitation suite, vow books, jewelry, perfume, or sentimental items. Having these ready ahead of time makes your getting ready moments feel calm and unrushed.
It is also a good idea to clean your rings and jewelry so they sparkle in your photos. Then take a deep breath, rest, and soak in the excitement of what is coming.
THE WEDDING DAY: SOAK IT ALL IN
By the time your wedding day arrives, you have done everything you need to do. Truly.
Your only job is to be present, hold your partner’s hand, and let yourself feel every moment. Trust your vendors, lean into the joy, and know that your story is being documented with care.
The most meaningful photos come from real emotion, not perfection.
Your wedding photos are not just about how everything looked. They are about how it felt to be there, together, surrounded by the people you love most!
If you are planning your wedding and want a photography experience that feels calm, supportive, and deeply personal, I would love to connect with you and walk through this season together!
