Wedding Planner vs Photographer: Who Should Create and Run Your Wedding Day Timeline?

One of the most common questions I get from couples is this:

“If you’re helping with our wedding day timeline, do we still need a wedding planner?”

Yes, I help guide your wedding day timeline. And I love doing so!
But with that said, that does not replace hiring a professional wedding planner.

Let’s talk about why.

What I Do as Your Wedding Photographer

When you book me as your wedding photographer, you are not just getting someone who shows up with a camera.

I help you thoughtfully build your wedding day timeline around:

• How long portraits realistically take
• When golden hour will hit
• The best light for your ceremony
• Buffer time so nothing feels rushed
• Protecting time for you to actually be present

I’ve photographed a lot of weddings. I know where timelines get tight. I know how quickly things can snowball when there isn’t breathing room. And I care deeply about making sure your day feels calm and joyful, not chaotic.

My timeline guidance is rooted in photography and experience.

But here’s the important distinction.

WHAT A WEDDING PLANNER DOES

A professional wedding planner or wedding day coordinator is not just helping build a timeline - they are producing the entire day!

Some valuable roles they play that I don’t do:

• Communicating with every vendor
• Managing arrivals and setup
• Running the timeline in real time
• Cueing your ceremony
• Handling family logistics
• Troubleshooting issues before you even know they exist
• Protecting the overall guest experience

While I am focused on capturing your story, they are focused on making sure the entire production runs smoothly.

That is a completely different role compared to my help as your photographer.

Why Photographer Timeline Guidance Is Not the Same as Hiring a Wedding Planner

My timeline is built around photography flow and protecting your experience in front of the camera.

A wedding planner’s timeline is built around logistics, vendor coordination, and execution.

Both matter. They just serve different purposes.

If I am stepping in to manage vendors, coordinate entrances, or solve production issues, I am no longer fully present doing what you hired me to do: documenting your wedding day with intention and care. And you deserve my full focus!

Why Hiring a Wedding Planner Elevates Your Wedding Experience

Especially for couples planning elevated or detail rich weddings, a planner makes all the difference.

A wedding planner brings leadership, organization, and calm. When I get to work alongside a professional planner, the day flows better. Portrait time is protected. Sunset doesn’t feel rushed. Reception transitions are smooth. And sometimes, you actually get to enjoy cocktail hour!!

It allows me to focus entirely on creating timeless, joyful images. And it allows you to stay present in the moments that matter most.

The Dream Team: Photographer and Planner Working Together

The most seamless wedding days happen when each vendor stays in their zone of genius.

Your planner coordinates.
Your photographer documents.
You get to soak it all in.

If you are planning your wedding and wondering whether hiring a wedding planner is worth it, I gently encourage you to consider the experience you want to have.

If your goal is a calm, organized, beautifully run wedding day where you feel supported and unrushed, hiring a professional wedding planner is one of the best investments you can make!
